Set inside a meander
of the River Severn Shrewsbury is the classic defensive site. In years gone by
this was necessary to protect the town from attacks from over the Welsh border.
Though this unsettled period of history is long gone traces can still be seen of
the old town wall. Set amongst the glorious Shropshire countryside Shrewsbury is
one of England's finest mediaeval towns, with a wealth of black and white
building
s
and old churches.
It
is the county
town of Shropshire and hold the
County Council offices and one of the two main hospitals. It is the principal
market town in the county and provides a wide range of services and
excellent shopping facilities. The main shopping area is based around Pride
Hill. Towards the river is the Quarry Park. Every August this hosts the world
famous Shrewsbury Flower Show.
In late June the town also hosts the
West Mid
Show and this is held on the showground to the North of the
town
centre. This
is one of the principal
agricultural shows in the country.
